Structure

Established by the Constitution

Article III of the Constitution established the United States Federal Court System: “The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.” It didn’t tell Congress how to set up the system

The Supreme Court is the Court of Final Appeal

The federal courts and the state courts are separate systems, both of which have the United States Supreme Court as the court of final appeal.
