Energy Law (LAWS 5754)

Course Info

Energy law is a large and growing area of increased importance. Energy use and production is subject to a wide range of state and federal laws. This course will focus on current energy law issues, particularly issues relating to production and use of electrical power. The course covers the interplay of state and federal regulation, utility rate regulation, energy production, and regulation of the environmental consequences of energy production and use, including climate change.

Instructor

Prof. David Kutik

Prof. David Kutik is a practicing attorney and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University.

Mr. Kutik is vice president of the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and chairs its Pro Bono Committee. He participates in Legal Aid’s Brief Advice and Referral Clinics, taking on family law matters at Saturday morning sessions in neighborhoods throughout the organization’s service area. He also chairs the Ohio State Bar Association Pro Bono Task Force, which has established judicially led committees to develop, recruit and recognize lawyers for pro bono programs in each appellate district in Ohio.

Mr. Kutik has served on or chaired numerous Cleveland Bar Association committees, including the Certified Grievance Committee, the Standing Committee on Professionalism, the Task Force on Multi-jurisdictional Practice, and the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. He serves on the Ohio State Bar Association’s Council of Delegates and is a life member of the Judicial Conference of the Eighth Judicial District of Ohio.

Apart from his legal community affiliations, Mr. Kutik sits on the Board of Directors of the Center for Families and Children. He is a past president and life member of the Board of Directors of The MetroHealth Foundation, Inc.

Mr. Kutik received the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation’s 2005 Presidential Award for "outstanding leadership regarding pro bono services." In 2007, Case Western Reserve University School of Law conferred on him the Centennial Medal, which is the school’s highest award for its alumni.
