Abstract: |
Similar to professionals and practitioners in other disciplines, the legal profession began exploring automated knowledge systems as a way to efficiently manage and access a burgeoning amount of information during the 1950s and 60s. This collection documents the history and development of the Ohio Bar Automated Research (OBAR) organization, a nonprofit subsidiary of the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA). After crafting a service definition calling for a non-indexed, online, interactive service to search the full text of Ohio legal materials, OBAR contracted with Data Corporation, an Ohio based company, to develop a database that subsequently laid the groundwork for Mead Data Central's LEXIS, the world's first commercial online legal research service in 1973. |
